Yesterday’s lackluster, underwritten script both births its golden egg concept, and also restrains it from ever reaching the next level of sophistication or interest.

What Richard Curtis brilliantly does with this well-worn storyline is bring in elements to make it feel fresh.

David Edelstein 25 Jun 2019

Curtis isn’t the director of Yesterday; Danny Boyle has been brought in to lend his shallow virtuosity. But fluid transitions don’t make the movie less clunky. Patel has an appealing presence and a lovely, McCartney-like tenor, but the musical numbers leave an odd taste.

"Yesterday", just as "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Rocketman", is meant to be a film based on a band, so a lot of The Beatle's music is supposed to be played during the course of it, but it failed to do so as they kept switching back and forth

(Mauro Lanari) The idea of the second chance thanks to an alternative/parallel world good for the cosmology of the MCU, a lovingly clumsy protagonist for unexplained reasons, the songs of the Fab Four and their epigones considered essential for a better world without any counterfactual. Boyle and Curtis churn out a product with a golden and inconsistent surface. Be careful to scratch off the patina.
