She is a scientist. He is a Lebanese doctor. They meet at a banquet and fall into a carefree, passionate relationship. But difficulties abound because of his heritage and her loveless marriage. With a plot revolving around main characters He and She, who (along with the other characters) speak entirely in iambic pentamiter, YES is poetic, interesting and explores issues we have all been facing since 9/11 and throughout time. A touching film made better by the brilliant directorial skills of Sally Potter (The Tango Lesson, Orlando) and incredible acting from Joan Allen and the entire cast.

Parse the philosophy behind the spill of words, though, and you'll find intellectual jumble, junk. Better to nod to Yes as a drowsing chant than take it seriously as a statement of global concerns.

One of the best movies written in these times, 2004. This is like discovering Van Gogh before he dies. This is a masterful creation, except for the performance of Sam Neill, who apparently doesn't have rhythm. This movie is a study of the human condition, 2004, written in prose. Let's see, the only other time that's put in a movie, is just about every musical. Right, a musical is prose put to music. The lines are crafted with care for both the meaning and the patter created by the arrangement. Acting is robust and convincing, (even Neill) with Joan Allen and Simon Abkarian connecting with each other on several levels. Camera-work is an entire film school study in perfection. Shirley Henderson plays the three hags to perfection. She has an eye for art when she picks a part that suits her. What makes this movie so hard to watch is that there is so little time to appreciate the beauty of the words as they fly by. Perhaps that is why we read Shakespeare more than we watch him performed.
