Year of the Dragon (1985)

In New York, racist Capt. Stanley White becomes obsessed with destroying a Chinese-American drug ring run by Joey Tai, an up-and-coming young gangster as ambitious as he is ruthless. While pursuing an unauthorized investigation, White grows increasingly willing to violate police protocol, resorting to progressively violent measures -- even as his concerned wife, Connie, and his superiors beg him to consider the consequences of his actions.

Cimino's best work, which ain't exactly a compliment. This is an engrossing story, with some very well-executed sequences. But the script, by Oliver Stone features too much machismo, loads of testosterone-soaked introspection. Rourke is brilliantly uneven in this film - wowing us with his emotional range in some scenes, and clowning his way through others. You have to give the script props for digging into the main character's home life, and for presenting a less-than-lovebale hero. The problem is, watching scenes of Mickey Rourke arguing with every. single. person. in his life gets tedious. But, when the film kicks into high gear, it kicks it with brutality, panache, and style. Worlds ahead of the over-rated Deer Hunter, IMHO. A briliant climax with Jone Lone and Mickey Rourke charging each other on a train bridge, shooting at each other as they go; two locomotives of thwarted ambition, righteousness, and rage. If only they'd managed to keep Mickey's hairstyle consistent throughout the film - his mane is very distracting.

Micheal Cimino dealing with a bizarre detective story. Mickey Rourke stands alone against the whole chinese mafia, until the last, epic but under the lines, final duel with John Lone, on the undeground rails. I got fascinated by this film, I think Cimino is one of the few directors that succesfully managed to renew Classicism in cinema, with courage and passion. His ability as a director can be found here everywhere, even in the most hard and dramatic situations he keeps his camera brilliant as a choreographer. Wonderful.
