Xiu Xiu: The Sent-Down Girl (1998)

Young teen girl Xiu Xiu is sent away to a remote corner of the Sichuan steppes for manual labor in 1975 (sending young people to there was a part of Cultural Revolution in China). A year later, she agrees to go to even more remote spot with a Tibetan saddle tramp Lao Jin to learn horse herding.

Tragic story that is symbolic on so many levels--a political condemnation of the Cultural Revolution, a young girl going from childhood innocence and hope to sexual knowledge and despair of the corruption of how the world works, Eve and Adam in paradise, but she eats the apple and the paradise turns to a life of hardship that leads to death. The cinematography is breathtakingly beautiful, also turning from the beautiful flowers of spring and summer to the cold and barrenness of winter. A lovely, if grim fable.

This is perhaps the most despressing movie in the history of depressing movies. Perhaps the most depressing story in the history of depressing stories. The film itself is interesting. A close look into rural life in 1970s china. Unfortunately, life does not turn out well for the sent down girl, nor for her custodian. Not for the feint of heart at all.
