Mitch Wayne is a geologist working for the Hadleys, an oil-rich Texas family. While the patriarch, Jasper, works hard to establish the family business, his irresponsible son, Kyle, is an alcoholic playboy, and his daughter, Marylee, is the town tramp. Mitch harbors a secret love for Kyle's unsatisfied wife, Lucy -- a fact that leaves him exposed when the jealous Marylee accuses him of murder.

A true soap opera, but so good and much more adult than I expected. Hints of sexual perversion and incest, overt alcoholism and a fantastic color scheme (check out that pink hotel). Everybody in it is just soooooo attractive.

Saying this movie is unrealistic is an understatement. It's unbelievably absurd. It's as subtle as a.... I dunno, you get my point. It actually reads like a comic book from the 50s, where stuff like a man proposing to a woman he met two hours before would be standard. All of the leads fall flat. Robert Stack was a parody of himself even before Airplane! and Rock Hudson and Lauren Bacall want to make me sleep. Dorothy Malone is the most interesting character here, and she's the villain. Yet, despite the extreme melodrama, Douglas Sirk seems like he's making a romance comic book onscreen. The colors are rich and beautiful, and the camerawork is good too. It takes some getting used to, and you may be laughing your ass off by the end (I was, at least), but as far as melodramas go, this one's pretty damn good. Just let it sink in.

my fourth sirk film and now i know what to look for that pleases me. the bold colors, the long shots, the images in the mirrors. malone definitely stands out with her wondeful performance............

Impeccably crafted fifties soap opera. Director Douglas Sirk elevates the trashy material to the level of classical tragedy.
