Mitch Wayne is a geologist working for the Hadleys, an oil-rich Texas family. While the patriarch, Jasper, works hard to establish the family business, his irresponsible son, Kyle, is an alcoholic playboy, and his daughter, Marylee, is the town tramp. Mitch harbors a secret love for Kyle's unsatisfied wife, Lucy -- a fact that leaves him exposed when the jealous Marylee accuses him of murder.

douglas sirk at his best. melodrama that just won't quit!

The trouble with this romantic picture—among other minor things, including Mr. Stack's absurd performance and another even more so by Miss Malone—is that nothing really happens, the complications within the characters are never clear and the sloppy, self-pitying fellow at the center of the whole thing is a bore.

As good as he was, Douglas Sirk inspired better films than the ones he made ("Ali: Fear Eats The Soul," "Far From Heaven," etc.), but this one's every bit as good as Haynes or Fassbinder's best. A ravishing Technicolor soap opera about one gloriously f***ed-up oil family, it makes "Dallas" look milquetoast in comparison.

Well, I'm going to mention something not yet mentioned by the look of it. Robert Stack! I was blown away, this is one of his best roles, he was incredible. He expanded alot from the gruff characters he typically plays.
