WR: Mysteries of the Organism (1971)

What does the energy harnessed through orgasm have to do with the state of communist Yugoslavia circa 1971? Only counterculture filmmaker extraordinaire Dušan Makavejev has the answers (or the questions). His surreal documentary-fiction collision begins as an investigation into the life and work of controversial psychologist and philosopher Wilhelm Reich and then explodes into a free-form narrative of a beautiful young Slavic girl's sexual liberation.

What do Wilhelm Reich, Frank Zappa, and a singing psychopathic ice skater have in common? After watching "Mysteries of the Organism" I still have no idea--- But it all spells "F-U-N" to me!

Ha-HA! I'm the first reviewer!... Anyways, this film is pretty great though it is no match for Makavejev's "Sweet Movie"--- Features Frank Zappa, decapitation via iceskate, and a beautiful musical number. Can't wait for that Criterion release.

The first half-hour, the documentary, is fascinating. The rest is a lesser version of Sweet Movie.

Part documentary about Wilhelm Reich, the radical psychoanalyst and originator of 'orgonomy'; part surreal satire on sexual repression in communist Yugoslavia. Such a disparate film shouldn't really work but it does due to its extraordinary wit and invention, even if it borders on insanity (like W.R. himself did by many accounts). The ending, featuring a decapitated head and a Soviet ice skater singing a ballad set against a snowy landscape, is strangely beautiful. Not a film to be watched in front of the bairns and not everybody's cup of tea but well worth investing some time in.

This is really quite the film. It first deals with Wildelm Reich and his theories or orgasms. We learn right from the begining that he would die for these experiments before we are shown the experiments themselves. This film has many scenes that will shock people but the very fact that they are so shocked is what the film is making a point of.
