In 1969, a young Beijing student, Chen Zhen, is sent to live among the nomadic herdsmen of Inner Mongolia. Wolf Totem offers nothing but an exhilarating audiovisual experience. Its narrative is problematic as its murky messages do not penetrate too deeply. It's beautiful but forgettable.

Though Wolf Totem is notable for being a Chinese-scripted-and-shot film that actually offers some kind of critique of the communists, it nevertheless falls into a fairly well-worn story of an outsider growing to appreciate a culture he's come to change.
