The earliest known film by an African American director (Oscar Micheaux) this silent film rightly takes its place in history as an important milestone and a sleeves-rolled-up response to racist works that had come before, such as Birth of a Nation. The film is little more than an hour long and it seems Micheaux tries to fit in a lot, with multiple plots weaving in and out of the main narrative and flashbacks serving to explain the pains and hardships of its heroine, such as violent assaults, rape and lynchings. There's much that is left unexplained and certain events and characters seem superfluous to the overall message of the film, which is to highlight racial inequality and lack of suffrage. At that, it does succeed. It is a shame that this film was not widely viewed in its day.

Wonderfully advanced piece of storytelling and film editing for its time. Viewed by many to be the antithesis of D.W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation, this film should be given more praise based on its own artistic merit. The only negative comment I can make about this film is that the pacing is inconsistent and leads to a dragging feeling for much of the last half of the film, but this opinion may be a direct result of my being a product of a generation of television & film that bombards its viewers with fast cuts and camera movements...

I wish it had music. Otherwise a rather impressive film for its time.

Oscar Micheaux's 1919 film, the oldest surviving film by an African-American director, is a dramatic tale of U.S. race relations in both the North and South.
