If you are one of those people under the mistaken assumption that the world is more dangerous than ever before, watching this film might damage your fragile mind.

Michael Lesy always wanted his book to be a film. These short stories from the turn of the 20th century are indicative of a pathetic mindset that still exists in the Midwest today, especially Wisconsin. The film adaptation was done in a way that mirrors the intent of the book, without resorting to outright explanation of the ideas it provokes (unfortunately for those with lack of insight). As a past resident of Wisconsin, I found none of these stories surprising

A meandering traipse through the strange history of Black River Falls, Wisconsin filmed like a dream and every bit as confusing and unfocused. There's some desperately interesting stuff in here but it struggles to make itself heard above a steady rush of odd, nasty, and plain disconcerting images. Probably the closest to a nightmare you're ever going to find in documentary cinema.

Whoa! What a trip. The overall aspects of the documentary were remarkable; unbelievably story and the photography were amazing. The whispering in the mental ward creeped me out. Too short, but only so much can happen in one town. Thanks for the recommendation, Ben Saylor.

This documentary about what happened in Black River Falls, Wisconsin from 1890 to 1900 is both strange and captivating. Many people just went crazy, killing themselves or other people.
