Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts are a married couple who've found themselves living a life that seems to have gotten away from them. They are no longer young enough to be spontaneous, but not yet old enough to give into middle age. They are in a rut, so when they come across 2 young people (Adam Driver, Amanda Seyfried) they are captivated and enthralled with the couple's outlook. In an attempt to cling to their own youthfulness, they start becoming different people, imitating the style of their new hipster friends. Lying to themselves and lying to each other, they grow more and more frustrated, and eventually more aware of what was truly bothering them. Unique for not conforming to typical tropes, While We're Young is happily truthful in the sense that real life doesn't always turn out like it does in the movies. A really nice story about relationships and about the importance of being comfortable with yourself so you can be a benefit to others.

Giving this just a 4 star for the time being; I know myself and I over analyze my favorite Director and Writers new works when I first see them. I always go in with preconceived notions from their earlier works and think I know what I want from something and then I get something a little bit different and I get a tad bit disappointed. The only thing about this film that left a bitter taste in my mouth was how it starts unraveling a little bit towards the end so awkwardly. It felt a little bit contrived to me. The film does do a lot of right, though! It's just as scathing as all of Baumbach's earlier work, but this time aimed a little more dead center and he nails it. Even if he stumbles a little bit of the way getting to his poignant, sharp point.

In the vein of a type of intellectual cinema that might be better described as a cross between the satirical nature of Woody Allen's lust for intergenerational portraits and Whit Stillman's acidic views on contemporary society through offbeat personas, Noah Baumbach demands, film after film, a greater appreciation for growing up. While We're Young, much like most of his filmography, is a coming-of-age tale. The difference here is that Baumbach understood that growing up doesn't mean becoming an adult, having children and conforming to societal norms. Instead, the acceptance of the unknown is compliant with notions of sharing and trust to provide for a heartfelt, beautifully acted and written portrait of life choices. Stiller shines in his best performance since Greenberg (also a collaboration with Baumbach), Watts showcases impressive range and Driver will be a star. Powered by another excellent soundtrack, While We're Young might very well be one of the New Yorker's best films to date.
