Whereas Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins's 1961 film felt more like a filmed rendition of the actual experience of watching the musical in question, Steven Spielberg's "West Side Story" feels like a true cinematic adaptation of the narrative at hand, complete with more realistic-looking sets, a more frank approach to handling the racially charged subject matter at hand and more immersive choreography. It's been a minute since I've seen the original adaptation, but at first blush I'd say this gives its predecessor a solid run for its money -- and that movie won the Academy Award for Best Picture. The cast is terrific, the music is (expectedly) fantastic and the changes made -- while slight and few -- are handled with a tender hand. Definitely a hard film to bag on.

There’s a touch of diet Brando about Elgort’s reformed bad boy-turned-lovebird, but Zegler brings a lovely brand of innocence and conviction to Maria. And don’t be surprised to see Moreno winning another Oscar. Or, for that matter, Spielberg.

Spielberg’s West Side Story is a resplendent entertainment and a reminder that at least some of cinema’s great classics can in fact find new life in the hands of a master director who is more concerned about crafting a movie than making a blockbuster.

Spielberg’s movie may be rougher, grittier, more lived-in and, in terms of cultural representation, more truthful than its 1961 cinematic incarnation. But it is also more unabashedly classical, more radiantly stylized, than just about anything a major American studio has released in years.

Easily the Best Film of 2021. Still timely and relevant as ever, with appropriate changes and updates from the 1961 version, an adaptation from the revised WSS on Broadway in 2020. Everything old is not just new again, but better. Spielberg has made a musical from cinematic heaven. 10 out of 10.
