of the three i have seen tonight, this one seems more photogenic - i love the juxtaposition in each scene. it could almost be a silent film, with the jazzy tune.

An innovative, highly influential New York indie, made by Moris Engel in ultra-realistic style

Engaging NYC realistic slice of life shoestring indie drama.

A heartfelt and honest film about a man of 35 years unwilling to commit to marriage and having children with his long-term girlfriend. It is an episodic meditation on the weight of a relationship, no matter how good it all seems, and how one can try to disrupt any sense of harmony for the inherent urge of remaining alone. The photography of Little Italy is wonderfully shot (Engel sure knew how to shoot his city), and the subplot of the photographer's mother roaming the city without a home are somber and true. John Myhers was miscast in the lead role. He mugs it up too often, but nonetheless he still provides effect, especially during the climax in the cemetery.

Engel's (presumably) autobiographical final film benefits from vastly improved sound recording technology, but I found it less engaging than "Lovers and Lollipops". I think it's because the narrative is stronger. I was drawn to the off-the-cuff style and focus on photographic details over more overt drama. By no means did he create a standard melodrama, but I came away from the film really liking a handful of scenes rather than the entire picture. This could be the indirect result of watching it immediately after one of his other films. I expected a continuation of that tone, so it took me a bit to adjust my expectations. We'll see how it stands up if I watch it again in a few years.
