Sam Spiegel comes up with a rarity: the intimate epic, in telling the fascinating story of the downfall of the Romanovs.

This film is a real childhood memory for me. I know when I first saw it as a teenager I was fascinated by this story. I think this was the first time I learnt about haemophilia and Rasputin. There is sadness at the loss of life, the love the tsar and tsarina obviously had for each other and their foolishness in some of their decisions.How could they have done things differently or were they doomed from the start? This film is a long haul but is beautifully shot and full of some of the 70s greatest classically trained actors like Suzman, Olivier, Harry Andrews, Jack Hawkins and familiar faces in their younger days like Ian Holm , Brian Cox, Fiona Fullerton and Lynne Frederick. Tom Baker stands out as Rasputin overacting wonderfully as they fail to bump him off several times!

Epic tragic story of the incompetent last tsar of Russia whose blunders were a primary cause of World War one, with disastrous consequences. The scenes with Rasputin and Lenin are very intriguing and interesting. The death of Rasputin scene can too horrific for many people.

Like Nicholas was one of the last czars of Russia, "Nicholas and Alexandra" is one of the last grand-scale epics to come out of Hollywood. While watching this in my modern history class, I must say that unlike most movies shown in class, I actually really enjoyed this film. The film obviously could have used a cut or two, but this is a great performance-driven drama. Tom Baker really stood out in the group as the vile faith-healer Rasputin. The film always had a strange shift from liveliness to somber drama, but hey, this was made in the seventies. This film, by no means, is on the same page as some of the grand-scale hits of the early 20th century, but for those who enjoy history and epics of earlier days, then I'd recommend this. Overall, "Nicholas and Alexandra" satisfies, but doesn't stun.

Approrpriately stately, visually beautiful but pondrous version of the tragic story of the doomed Russian royal family. The acting for the most part is fine but the canvas of events is so large that even at the extensive length almost all other characters excepting the two leads pass through without much depth. An interesting film but never compelling.
