Two nincompoops surrounded by fools drag Russia into revolution and are (in my view) justly shot. All power to the workers soviets! Franklin Schaffner's next film after Patton. Hmm.

The film, as a whole, skimps occasionally on historical accuracy, but screenwriter James Goldman does present a functional drama animating the collapse of the Romanov dynasty. Michael Jayston and Janet Suzman are good, not great, as the title monarchs, but they are supported by an extraordinary cast: Tom Baker (as a terrifyingly convincing Rasputin), Harry Andrews (a brilliant character actor), Jack Hawkins, Irene Worth, Michael Redgrave, Alan Webb, and Laurence Olivier (Sophoclean as the ignored Count Witte). Schaffner definitely scores in this grand, sumptuous epic, though it lacks the perfection of Patton.

An epic portrayal of corruption,oppression and bloodshed that led upto the Russian revolution,with great acting by Sir Laurence Olivier and good acting by Jayston and Suzman as the lead roles,the film is extremely moving at times.

Approrpriately stately, visually beautiful but pondrous version of the tragic story of the doomed Russian royal family. The acting for the most part is fine but the canvas of events is so large that even at the extensive length almost all other characters excepting the two leads pass through without much depth. An interesting film but never compelling.
