Walkabout (1971)

Under the pretense of having a picnic, a geologist takes his teenage daughter and 6-year-old son into the Australian outback and attempts to shoot them. When he fails, he turns the gun on himself, and the two city-bred children must contend with harsh wilderness alone. They are saved by a chance encounter with an Aboriginal boy who shows them how to survive, and in the process underscores the disharmony between nature and modern life.

Perfect. Great editing and cinematography. A strange but moving (and eventually heartbreaking) coming of age story.

Well, one of my goals for 2008 was to introduce myself to Nicolas Roeg. This was a heck of a way to start. With Walkabout, it's easy to see that Roeg was a cinematographer before he became a director. This film is one of the best visual experiences I've ever had. The lighting, the camera movements, the focal points - all amazing. There were a few scenes that felt a little dated, such as the choppy cuts during the rifle hunting scene, but those are easily forgivable considering the perfection of the rest. My only other small complaint is what seemed like a few unecessary scenes, one being the last one. Some scenes just didn't fit with the rest of the film. Most of that doesn't matter because of the film's amazing look and fantastic cross-culture study. If this is any sign of what's to come with Roeg, I may have found a new director to add to my list of favorites.

A masterpiece! The odyessy a girl and her brother take with the aid of an Aborigine is much more than you might believe. It suggests that we all develop specific skills and talents in response to our environment, but cannot easily function across a broader range. Also it shows the way we communicate to others can trap our true feelings.

Shocking for it's real on screen killing of animals and it's full frontal nudity scenes of Jenny Agutter (who was actually only 15 at the time!) One of director Nicholas Roeg's finest features. The photography of the Australian outback (and all it's weird and wonderful inhabitants) is fantastic. A very downbeat movie on the whole - once seen, not forgotten.
