Waking Sleeping Beauty (2010)

By the mid-1980s, the fabled animation studios of Walt Disney had fallen on hard times. The artists were polarized between newcomers hungry to innovate and old timers not yet ready to relinquish control. These conditions produced a series of box-office flops and pessimistic forecasts: maybe the best days of animation were over. Maybe the public didn't care. Only a miracle or a magic spell could produce a happy ending. Waking Sleeping Beauty is no fairy tale. It's the true story of how Disney regained its magic with a staggering output of hits - "Little Mermaid," "Beauty and the Beast ," "Aladdin," "The Lion King," and more - over a 10-year period.

A behind the scenes doc that isn't afraid to show some big Hollywood players in a negative light, but never sullies the Disney name. It's not as comprehensive as I'd have liked (it mentions Katzenberg's quitting but not Dreamworks) but anyone who grew up on the era of Disney animation that spanned from 'Fox and the Hound' to 'The Lion King' -like me- will find it interesting.

I'm not a huge Disney fan but I really enjoyed this documentary. Its full of interesting behind the scenes stories and even the way that well known movies were developed was fascinating. I also liked the section where they tied the plot line and themes of The Lion King to the Disney empire itself.

An amazing story. Just amazing seeing the workloads taken on by these machine like animators. The sacrifices made for the sake of business is amazing. I had no idea obviously as a child. I just remember wanting to watch those movies time and time again. Its fantastic that these folks were recording everything with their cameras. Tons of great behind the scenes footage. Great shots of the first sketches. I want to go back and watch all of those old films again.

Waking Sleeping Beauty is a fantastic documentary. I don't really watch documentaries to begin with, but because this focuses on the Walt Disney Animation Studios, so for me it was a must see. This documentary focuses on the slow resurrection of the Walt Disney Animation Studios from 1981 - 1994, from box office failures to some of the Highest Grossing Animated Films of all time. This involved bringing in new faces, upgrading animation equipment/technology, and creating masterpiece films. Produced and Directed by longtime Disney Producer Don Bluth, this documentary is a must see for Disney fans.

Great movie about the Renaissance of Disney animation. I grew up during this period, so these movies, at least to me, are classic. They created characters & songs that will stay with me for my entire life. This story needed to be told because the journey to get those movies made was hard & grueling. Those animators are amazing & so are the big-wigs who supported them.
