A seminary student on monastery holiday kills an old witch in a remote village. The hag then transforms into a beautiful young woman whose dying wish is for him to watch over her wake for three nights. With terrors occurring and his faith waning, he reads prayers on the overnight watch and tries to survive the supernatural encounters.

if you thought Viy was AWESOME I really recommend reading the story it is based on by Gogol, especially in Russian it is amazing...!

Russian film is more of a spooky fairy tale then a horror film as it tells the story of an arrogant young monk who encounters, and in fear, beats, an old witch who then, near death, transforms into a young girl. In a horrifying turn of events, on her death bed, she requests the monk to preside over her corpse during the wake. This means he must spend three increasingly scary nights alone with the vengeful young witch's body. The visuals are worth watching this for by themselves and the film uses them to create some haunting sequences and great atmoshere. Each night with the body is worse then the last and it plays like a story out of the Brothers Grimm as the young monk learns the consequences for his wrongful deed. This "horror" flick is a favorite and is highly recommended to those who appreciate something different.

Absolutely terrible. The witch riding a guy's back and air-surfing in a coffin are so laughable. I do not laugh at horror movies if they pale to modern standards - I laugh if they fail on their own terms. This film builds no suspense, interest in characters or meaning, and although the clay demonds are almost cool they are ruined by silly showmanship directing.

A young semenary student has been summoned to say prayers over a recently deceased beautiful girl who is a witch - and the young priest has met up with her in the past. Very good morality tale with plenty of eerie atmosphere and some frightful ghouls (for the time).
