So I think I should be qualified as a faithful supporter of Tsai since only 3 out of his films that I didn't go to a theater to see. After nearly 16 years, the digital restoration print which just freshly came out of the oven was still very gripping. Even with very little dialogue which it's best known for, it demonstrates how to make the audience focus with the interactions. I'm not a fan of Tsai at all, but I'm now absolutely certain that this is his masterpiece.

My reaction to Tsai's film always run the gamut from frustration to confused rage (HULK SMASH), but at least he provokes a reaction and his work is always original and stays true to what he wants to do. As Tsai so recently said, his films are not for the average movie-goer. Take what you will from watching this film but throw out your pre-conceived ideas of what film should be.

The quinessential Tsai Ming Liang film. An affecting portrait of modern alienation in Taipei. Three lonely people unknowingly share a luxury apartment for sale. This idea came from the fact that the real estate industry boom in the 80's left Taiwan with the highest rate of unoccupied homes in the world. The film is very Antonioni-esque but with an extra dose of minimalism and deadpan humor and without the brilliant visual compositions of L' Avventura or L'Eclisse. This being his second film, Tsai hasn't yet perfected his visual style.

Released on the same year Wong Kar Wai gave us his romantic vision of loneliness and urban alienation on the city of Hong Kong in Chungking Express, Tsai Miang Liang was at his best here, delivered a similar themed movie but with everything striped raw resulting this voyeuristic vision of 3 vulnerable souls living in Taipei. They crossed paths with aching longing to be emotionally connected but they simply do not know how.
