Videodrome (1983)

As the president of a trashy TV channel, Max Renn is desperate for new programming to attract viewers. When he happens upon "Videodrome," a TV show dedicated to gratuitous torture and punishment, Max sees a potential hit and broadcasts the show on his channel. However, after his girlfriend auditions for the show and never returns, Max investigates the truth behind Videodrome and discovers that the graphic violence may not be as fake as he thought.

This is still one of the best movies ever made. I love the Flixster description of it. It makes it sound like a comedy. Anyway, if you haven't seen this I don't know you.

I love Cronenberg. This film was gritty and surreal, certainly a mind expanding flick. Paving the way for other magicians of the macabre from Lynch and Aranowsky to Shinya Tsukamoto and Miike.

"Television is reality, and reality is less than television." Max Renn(James Woods) is a sleazy president of Civic Channel 83 which shows softcore pornography and some violent material. He is always on the lookout for new cheap, erotic films for his station in this 1983 David Cronenberg disturbing yet watchable classic. When his employee decodes a pirate video broadcast showing torture, murder, and mutilation(Videodrome), Max becomes obsessed with acquiring this series for his channel. Max's sado-masochistic girlfriend Nicki Brand portrayed by Deborah Harry a.k.a Blondie goes to Pittburgh,PA to audition for this series which is very much to her twisted liking. As Max learns more and more about this particular snuff broadcast, it becomes clear that what he's dealing with is much more than a television program. "Long live the new flesh".

Rating: A+, It was truely ahead of it's time. It predicted one major point which still stands strong, that the media controls our life. Let's face it, with the internet and T.V. the media does have an influence over our life. It's ever so present and tries to take control over every aspect of our lives. This is a great theme in the movie. The idea of Videodrome is to destroy all the low lifes in the world who watch T.V. that is considered unhealthy or crude. This way the U.S. won't be considered weak. It's a sick way how some people can use the media to their advantage. But let's face it, that's the overall goal of the media, to put thoughts in our brain. Buy this, go here and so forth. That's what the film's major achievment is. The plot may be to muddled for most to understand, but if you give it enough atention you may get it. In the end, LONG LIVE THE NEW FLESH!!!
