Valentine Road (2013)

On February 12, 2008, in Oxnard, California, eighth-grade student Brandon McInerney shot his classmate Larry King twice in the back of the head during first period. When Larry died two days later, his murder shocked the nation. Was this a hate crime, one perpetrated by a budding neo-Nazi whose masculinity was threatened by an effeminate gay kid who may have had a crush on him? Or was there even more to it?

"Valentine Road" is a tale of two victims: one, a misunderstood but outspoken boy snuffed out by the hatred of a classmate, and the other the classmate behind the trigger, mistreated by those who should have known better and by his own violent tendencies. "Valentine" does not judge who is the bigger victim or which side you should take, but what it does is make you pick a side by the end of its ninety minute duration. It's ultimately a lesson on the failures of law enforcement, caregivers and the educational system, and it will haunt you whenever you stand face to face with a child.

Heartbreaking and maddening this doc chronicles the murder, aftermath and history of gay student Larry king in Oxnard by a classmate

Brian Gibson 30 Aug 2015

Plumbs the pathetic depths of intolerance and distorted compassion in one of the supposedly most liberal states in the union. Its panoramic and both-sides approach to a brutal, traumatizing act of retaliatory violence chills and stills the heart.

what this documentary show us is,how we,as a society, need to grow more,be more open-minded,more forgiving, and less negative, less judgmental and homophobic.

Haunting, heartfelt and even-handed, Valentine Road should be required viewing in teaching tolerance on middle-school and high-school campuses.
