A great film from Mizoguchi, who had to plead with the US censors to allow it to be made, dealing with the twin themes of the lowly position of women in Edo society, and the constraints forced on artists.

The story illustrates how artists can't stay true to themselves if they're restricted by guidelines and revolves around numerous love affairs that all have in common an obsession with beauty and a disregard for others' feelings.
