It isn't every day that you see a film about a love triangle between a man and wife and the ghost of the husband's secret male lover, and there's therefore a danger of seeing 'Undertow' as something of a novelty item. It deserves better, because it uses magic realism cleverly to tell a thoughtful and very well acted tale. Set in a staunchly Catholic Peruvian fishing village, the film clearly reveals the hurt caused by the deep homophobia and entrenched gender roles in the village, while at the same time showing the rare degree of neighbourly mutual support to be found in this old-fashioned faith-based community. The ending felt a little contrived and soap-operatic, but this is an intelligent examination of some of the pros and cons of tradition.

Very well done. Tender, thoughtful and full of angst. Tries to express the complications of the major players -- the young gay painter, the married protagonist about to have a child, his wife who is caught in a situation for which she is unprepared. Also, does a good job of handling the cultural distain by adding characters whose humanity overcomes their prejudices, who step up and defy the more conventional elements around them. Best movie about gay men I've ever seen on Netflix.

A pesar de ciertos errores narrativos que a ratos podrían hacer sentir a la historia forzada, Contracorriente trasciende de todo morbo y llega a transmitir las pasiones sinceras de los personajes y el drama de su historia. Acompañado de las magníficas actuaciones de los tres protagonistas esta pelicula es un must watch.
