There is an occasional sense of self-awareness that this is all pointless and silly, but 139 minutes is a long time for a film to forgo even delayed gratification.

This film could be best described as beautifully bizarre, a flavor of film for viewers with a very specific taste. Under the Silver Lake is a trippy experience through a mystical Los Angeles that I wish existed...minus the murder.

It doesn’t help that the plot is tortuous, and the resolution is an inarguable letdown. And yet! Mitchell’s ambitions, observations, and moods make the picture a dippy blast, like a hallucinatory trip that definitely goes on too long but is well worth the insights and surprises.
