Mitchell has made a stylish, occasionally intriguing film, by turns idiosyncratically funny and downright scary. But he says and shows a lot of bothersome things throughout, which I’m not quite sure how to approach.

Mike D'Angelo 16 Apr 2019

Enabling and mocking paranoid obsession at the same time might sound incoherent. In this hilariously demented spin on L.A. noir, it’s simply honest.

Fred Topel 12 Nov 2018

Under the Silver Lake is not science fiction or fantasy, but it is just surreal enough to make you think it could be.

Katherine McLaughlin 17 May 2018

Under the Silver Lake lacks the calamitous hilarity of its predecessors, but Mitchell occasionally digs up gold as his protagonist delves around Hollywood.

Gus Edgar 19 May 2018

It's a lot to process - I think it may be a modern masterpiece? Who knows. The parrot has the answers, but good luck making out what it's trying to say.
