This movie epitomizes everything I dislike about Art House Cinema. Its slow, oh so slow, long, lingering shots of NOTHING for a minute, yawn... characters that are just not interesting, in fact, when it came to the "shock ending", I really wanted something bad to happen to them and what did, was not bad enough. He is just a slime-ball, she is overly emotional crazy person. This should have been called 29 Yawns, it would have described the first half, another 29 would have finished the film of. Like many art house directors, Dumont throws in "explicit sex scenes" which again, not that much. There is a sticker on the cover saying "The Film They Didn't Want You To See", I guess so that people didn't realise how dull it is. The only reason I have given it 2 stars is because at least it looks good. If you "enjoy" art house, you'll probably love it, 'cause thats the norm, anyone how knows what a good film is, or just wants to be entertained... pass.

Beautifully shot but ultimately boring film. I understand Dumont did not want a plot but there seems to be no character motivation especially with the truck full of men who rape one of the main characters. I suppose events like this happen this way in reality--just coming from nowhere for no reason. The violent ending really has no connection to anything. Why this film keeps being referred to as a "horror" film is beyond me As Hitchcock says, â??what is drama, after all, but life with the dull bits cut outâ?¦â?? This film is just the opposite. All the drama has been taken out and a bucket load of dull bit added. If you want to see two people drive some, roam desert rocks some, screw some, drive some more and then screw some more go for it.

There's a lot to say about this film. It's tedeious and monotonous. It's not enjoyable. But I never turned it off or wanted to stop watching it. The movie is never beautiful. It is obsessed with sex and violence in America. The director said that the horror genre was his pretext for the film since it best represents American film. Ultimate tragedy.

Twentynine Palms is another in a string of recent French movies in which the body is no longer sacred, a churning, jerking, oozing machine. But Dumont seems to be working toward human discovery.

Poor characters, and confused motivations. Plus for the ending, otherwise not worthwile.
