A thousand words a minute. This film invented screwball. Hard to get a hod of now, used to have it on video. Great film to watch when its a long afternoon and you need inspration to write great dialogue!

John Barrymore is magnificent as the theater director who's utterly convinced of his own genius and taken to spells of grandeur and theatrics; in fact, he lives his life as if it were a melodramatic play. When he manages to convince Carole Lombard of her genius as an actor and make a star out her, their egos inevitably clash. Great fun. Best line: "Go on, Owen... tell her I'm dying... and DON'T OVERACT!"

To enjoy a screwball comedy, you have to like at least one of the main characters. John Barrymore's overacted, Machiavellian director is insufferable, and Carol Lombard's initially weak and dull faux-movie-star is annoying. I chuckled a couple times but was sorely disappointed. If you want to witness Howard Hawks' true brilliance, watch His Girl Friday instead!

great early screwball comedy with a hilarious performance by john barrymore as a hammy broadway producer and carole lombard as his adorable diva. hawks soon perfected his rapid-fire style with bringing up baby and his girl friday

The movie is a veritable concerto for their remarkable talents, put across by Hawks with maximal energy and voltage.
