The people are almost too good to be true in this film. Well, the good ones anyway, and even the bad ones. Unconventional story that was fun to watch.

Ok, this is clearly a movie that will appeal to some and not others. It has great period sets, there are a number of plot points, which I liked as texture. Mostly drama, with some humor, even farcical, almost operatic like scenes. I almost did not go, but my friend really wanted to see this based on seeing a preview. I am very glad to have seen it and recommend it highly if you enjoy period pieces with dense plotting. A lot goes on in this Tulip Fever! I was never bored and my friend and I spoke about it afterwards for quite awhile. It was a good date movie.

Great look, great cast ... but everything just sits there like a tableful of delicious ingredients waiting for a master chef who never shows up.

The film is populated with so many ancillary characters, which are far more engaging than the central lovers, that their antics too often distract from the central plot.

Nearly every role is miscast, which is rather amazing. Christoph Waltz and Judi Dench (as an abbess) are perhaps the exceptions.
