Triumph of the Wall (2013)

"A filmed chronicle about the construction of a 1000-foot dry-stone wall by a novice stonemason in rural Quebec. The stonemason, Chris Overing, is to complete the stone structure within eight weeks; the filmmaker, Bill Stone plans the film as a straightforward telling of this laborious yet creative task. But after Overing realizes he has woefully underestimated the time and energy required to construct the wall, both projects evolve into something altogether different.

"Sometimes you start things, and you don't know exactly why," muses filmmaker Bill Stone, surely expressing the feelings of everyone who buys a ticket to his aimless, and seemingly endless, documentary.

Frank Scheck 29 May 2013

Attempting to be a meditation on the nature of creative passion and the emotionally liberating effects of physical labor, Triumph of the Wall is as much of an exercise in frustration for the viewer as for its hapless protagonist.

Zachary Wigon 27 May 2013

Triumph of the Wall is often painfully boring and rather shapeless, not so much a crafted film as a compendium of one guy's musings. Regardless, in an era when seemingly every documentary is tied to a hot-button issue, making one about a guy building a wall is endearing.

Nicolas Rapold 29 May 2013

Neither the very relaxed pace of this builder, Chris Overing, nor Mr. Stone’s sporadically amusing neuroses about his filmmaking make for a gripping documentary.

Frank Lovece 30 May 2013

Navel-gazing documentary that's less about the subject-the building of a stone wall-than about the filmmaker obsessing over the subject and himself. Vocally. Continuously. Numbingly.
