Trilogy of Terror (1968)

An anthology divided in three segments, helmed by three of the most important Brazilian directors of the 20th century. A mother becomes involved with black magic and offers a virgin woman to the Devil in exchange for curing the illness of her only son. A poor laborer is the only man in the village with courage to face a group of guerrilheiros ("guerrilla ghosts") that haunt the minds of the locals. A young man is afflicted by fear of reptiles and spiders and the fear of being buried alive. When he undergoes a shocking event, he becomes unresponsive and is mistakenly buried, only to revive in the coffin after burial.

My opinion of this film is, I suspect, the same as 99% of people's: the first two segments are passable, mediocre made-for-TV horror fare, while the third segement is superb. The final shot of sharp-toothed Karen Black, crouching down, bouncing her knife off the floor and grinning demonically, is one of the all time classic horror images. The Dark Sky DVD is great.

I love Anthologies no matter the era or budget.

First story was ok, second was rather dull and predictable, third was hilarious!!! Not sure if this merits 3 stars but it was good enough and short enough to make me chuckle a few times and keep my attention. This movie is much like the Creepshow franchise (but Trilogy of Terror was done before that franchise) in feel. Acting isn't too good and the second story really was quite boring but the first and third story made up for it just enough to give it a decent rating.

I LOVE the third story. The first two are just OK.
