Kim is deft and sensitive with her tiny co-stars, but Treeless Mountain lacks the freshness and surprise of "In Between Days."

What a poignant, simple, moving film. These little girls captivate the audience in this melancholy tale. I was riveted, just by their depth of expression and the realism of the story. I hope to see Hee Yeon Kim on screen again.

Elizabeth Kerr 14 Jan 2013

Without wallowing in sentimentality or judging any of her characters, Kim has drawn a mature portrait of an elementary school girl old before her time and a loss of childhood that rings true on every level.

Director So Yong Kim sticks to the objective angle in her sophomore film Treeless Mountain, essentially a story about abused children, but without even hinting at the melodramatic and exploitative. Like In Between Days before it, Treeless Mountain is naturalistic to the extreme, even to the point of placing the camera at the kid's eye-level, just to make sure to get the right perspective. Kim also works hevily with close-ups, creating an intimate feel and a sense of fragility surrounding the characters. And if child actors can be rated, these get full marks.

Beautiful and subtle. Delicate direction and lovely performances.
