Arguably Godard's most heavy-handed political creation of his career. It acts as an excellent complement to, and maybe even explanation of, his masterpiece "Week-End." In both, we find what makes a Godard great: his use of single shot scenes, sliding horizontally. In Tout Va B!ien, viewers are taken aback by two in particular: the panoramic view of the factory as the workers stage their revolt, and the scene of the industrial supermarket, full of shoppers, attendants, communists pontificating, and rebellious youths.

Tracking shots were amazing and Yves Montand is eternally watchable. If you are not interested in deep examination of the French class system - just fast forward until you see the supermarche!

A political picture documenting a complex moment in time. Plenty of interesting discussions. All of the tracking shots are great, as is the "Ladies Man" set. It's not a terribly enjoyable film, but this is Godard and Gorin coming off of a four-year stint making inaccessible Marxist experimental films, so you shouldn't walk into this one expecting to have a lot of fun. And for a movie that was supposedly written by Gorin, there's a surprisingly small amount of profanity in it, so that's a shame.

this film requires lengthy commentary, for which I am unfit at present. (It is 2:45am). Many memorable moments though. It's an effective critical look at consumer capitalism but also an autocritique of sloganeering leftist opposition amid the post-1968 'come down'. Godard also reflects on the medium of film itself within a capitalist culture industry (hence, the opening sequence with all its talk of getting 'stars' on board, writing the cheques, etc). The close of the film has an amazing setpiece in a Carrefour supermarche, which employs a long tracking shot that moves from left to right many times - in this way, you can see where Haneke et al. often pay homage to JLG in their own work. A great film not only in relation to its original context, but clearly still with much relevance today.

I found Tout Va Bien to be a completely worthless film. It starts off all right, similar to a Wes Anderson film, but it goes downhill fast. It is a very political film, and the politics don't really apply to today. There isn't much of a story to it, and there isn't any strong charactors so it doesn't do much to hold your attention. The acting is good, but the direction is a bit pretentious. Shots last far too long, and the majority of the movie is filled in by monotonous monologues. By the time the movie was almost over I literally had to restrain myself from fast-forwarding to end it sooner. Not worth your time. Overall 1.5/4 Stars Grade = C-
