Topsy-Turvy (1999)

For nearly a decade, Gilbert and Sullivan's collaborations have delighted the English people. But in 1884, as a London heat wave cuts into the theater trade, their latest work, "Princess Ida", receives lukewarm press. In an effort to reconcile their creative differences and drawing inspiration from Japanese culture, they went on to create the hit opera "The Mikado", one of the duo's greatest successes.

Mike Leigh's instant masterpiece is the most unlikely film in his oeuvre; a meticulously researched, dressed, and performed back-stage theater dramedy about the making of Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Mikado", paying equal respect and time to Gilbert's inspired writing and directing and Sullivan's impossibly witty orchestrations. Immaculate on every level, but Jim Broadbent and Allan Corduner as G&S, respectively, are tops.

The sense of a work of art coming to life has rarely been more beautifully or excitingly portrayed. This is a film not to be missed.

Mike Leigh is one of Britain's masterful writers of character, particularly for women. Each performance here is a gem of detail and nuance, no rushing through moments. Rare for Leigh to plumb historical detail so lovingly. Not an ounce of cynicism in this story at all. Great fun, awesome music. An actor's film. 10/10!

i remember this movie not being anything i had expected but watching it twice in one day because i simply wanted to hang out with these characters and locales again. i was only thirteen at the time to boot. weird to think of the stuff i was into back then. a really underrated little movie.

One of my deepest obsessions is this perfect Mike Leigh film. It's the best film about the artistic process ever made, "THANK YOU VERY MUCH."
