Too Late the Hero (1970)

A WWII film set on a Pacific island. Japanese and allied forces occupy different parts of the island. When a group of British soldiers are sent on a mission behind enemy lines, things don't go exactly to plan. This film differs in that some of the 'heroes' are very reluctant, but they come good when they are pursued by the Japanese who are determined to prevent them returning to base.

This film is class - Michael and Cliff Robertson, especially the end when they escape from the Japs. Who survives, you don't find out until right at the end.

Another underrated gem from Aldrich, with a stellar cast. This is a bit less exploratory and meaty as Aldrich's other stuff, but it's nonetheless highly entertaining from start to finish. The climax, in particular, is magnificent - Caine and Robertson making their mad dash for freedom in long shots, so that they're indistinguishable, while we get choice closeups of the pursuing Japanese, and the complacent observer in Harry Andrews. Great stuff. Ken Takakura is really terrific, but the best performance for me came from Denholm Elliot, who is ultimately cast against type to some degree.

I love this film! i can't rate it highly enough. Michael Caine and Cliff Robertson at their best
