Too Late the Hero (1970)

A WWII film set on a Pacific island. Japanese and allied forces occupy different parts of the island. When a group of British soldiers are sent on a mission behind enemy lines, things don't go exactly to plan. This film differs in that some of the 'heroes' are very reluctant, but they come good when they are pursued by the Japanese who are determined to prevent them returning to base.

Fine performances from Caine and Robertson, well drawn characters, and moments of tough and brutal violence make this film a tense and gritty war film. The film is marred by some stereotyping of the Japanese soldiers and the plot does have its dry spells but it is a solid entry into the "commando" sub-genre.

Cracking war adventure from Robert Aldrich, the subversive genius behind The Dirty Dozen, Flight of the Phoenix, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, The Killing of Sister George etc. Tons of class British actors in the cast, including Ronald Fraser, Lance Percival, Denholm Elliott, as well as the main stars, Michael Caine and Cliff Robertson (and even a cameo from Henry Fonda).

If you like war films, this is a classic.

Another underrated gem from Aldrich, with a stellar cast. This is a bit less exploratory and meaty as Aldrich's other stuff, but it's nonetheless highly entertaining from start to finish. The climax, in particular, is magnificent - Caine and Robertson making their mad dash for freedom in long shots, so that they're indistinguishable, while we get choice closeups of the pursuing Japanese, and the complacent observer in Harry Andrews. Great stuff. Ken Takakura is really terrific, but the best performance for me came from Denholm Elliot, who is ultimately cast against type to some degree.
