Tokyo Tribe (2014)

In an alternate Japan, territorial street gangs form opposing factions collectively known as the Tokyo Tribes. Merra, leader of the Wu-Ronz tribe of Bukuro, joins forces with heavy-hitting gangster Buppa of Buppa Town. With Buppa's support, Merra aims to initiate a gang war between the Wu-Ronz and the Musashino Saru, and in a confrontation between the two attempts to kill Kai of the Musashino Saru. The inadvertent murder of Kai's friend Tera (a Musashino Saru member beloved by all Tribes since before their formation) leads to the joining of forces between all of the Tribes in an all-out war against Merra and Buppa.

Amusingly tacky and offensive though it is, proceedings grow a bit monotonous, because all the tunes have pretty much the same beat and everything is pitched at the same hysterical, OTT level.

There's a halfway interesting movie in here somewhere. Beneath the rampant sexism and borderline schizophrenic mishmash of tones, that is.

I enjoyed the passion and I could see the effort the cast contributed to the art style. I was especially happy to see Shokotan playing her favorite cosplay, Bruce! Bonus points for that!

Sono's hyper-kinetic high jinks will not be to all tastes, but this promises and delivers a quintessentially Japanese level of insanity.

Tokyo Tribe is a film which goes out of its way to be as scattershot and lively as possible in its execution, yet is strangely bereft of much in the way of thrills or humour.
