Tokyo Tribe (2014)

In an alternate Japan, territorial street gangs form opposing factions collectively known as the Tokyo Tribes. Merra, leader of the Wu-Ronz tribe of Bukuro, joins forces with heavy-hitting gangster Buppa of Buppa Town. With Buppa's support, Merra aims to initiate a gang war between the Wu-Ronz and the Musashino Saru, and in a confrontation between the two attempts to kill Kai of the Musashino Saru. The inadvertent murder of Kai's friend Tera (a Musashino Saru member beloved by all Tribes since before their formation) leads to the joining of forces between all of the Tribes in an all-out war against Merra and Buppa.

Outwardly frivolous, frenetic and fueled with a bizarre combination of opulence and outlandishness, Tokyo Tribe will indeed stimulate the senses with its hodge-podge of hedonistic heft in the realm of instantaneous insanity.

There's a halfway interesting movie in here somewhere. Beneath the rampant sexism and borderline schizophrenic mishmash of tones, that is.

I liked the style, I liked the uniqueness of it all, even though I'm not into rap-hop (quite opposed to it, actually). The concept of this movie was pretty awesome. It's unfortunate that it also kind of lets itsself down towards the end. I guess it's partially black comedy, but it has some really silly elements, while also having some really serious and awful stuff in it. The final act actually loses some steam in terms of Sono's usually adept editing and story-telling. As well as adding in some wholly-unnecessary CGI elements. The movie starts out kind of normal, relateable, grounded, but as it goes on more and more ridiculous things are added to the mix. Eventually it becomes overwhelming, cartoony. If the tone could have been kept throughout the film, without the editing starting to fail, I think this movie could have been a 3/5 for me. Still, heaps of swearing and violence, sexual references and lots of nudity (boobs) to consider.

Beneath the goofy plot, the tacky fashions, the fronting rappers, and the exploding bodies, there’s an undeniable earnestness to Tokyo Tribe. It’s the craziest film you’ll see this year, but it’s also — dear God, am I really saying this? — one of the sweetest.
