Before leaving for Rome with his mother, five year old Natan is taken by his father, Jorge, on an epic journey to the pristine Chinchorro reef off the coast of Mexico. As they fish, swim, and sail the turquoise waters of the open sea, Natan discovers the beauty of his Mayan heritage and learns to live in harmony with life above and below the surface, as the bond between father and son grows stronger before their inevitable farewell.

A heady, hypnotic semi-documentary that examines the bonding of a father and son in the Banco Chinchorro coral reefs. Beautifully shot and directed with some stunning moments - a cinematic oasis of harmony and balance. Disagree entirely with some of the reviews suggesting it's 'naive' and lacking in 'answers'.

Not really a drama, more a documentary with a storyline. Beautifully shot, slow moving and explanatory rather than narrative. Very pleasant, exploring a world which few of us inhabit with great sensitivity.

A beautiful film about a father teaching his son how to survive on the bumpy sea that is life. Alamar is a masterpiece in every sense of the word, a masterpiece of cinematographry, narrative, directing, and acting.
