Three Coins in the Fountain (1954)

Three American roommates working in Italy wish for the man of their dreams after throwing coins into Rome's magnificent Trevi Fountain. Frances, a secretary at a government agency, sets out to win the heart of her smooth-talking novelist employer; Anita, her coworker, defies office regulations by romancing an Italian who works at the agency; and office newcomer Maria meets a real Italian Prince Charming and falls madly in love. The only thing the three hopeful ladies need to do is seal their fate.

Not very nice to the women, for what was probably considered a 'woman's picture.'

A supprisingly delightful melodrama which has a little more substance than other 50's romances, the majority of the cast give a good performance, Clifton Webb plays the pompus clueless writer well; its basically an old fashioned romance. Three women living in Rome drop coins into the mystical trevi fountain and gradually romance blossoms infront of their eyes. Some of the dialogue is a little mondane and fake and so loses focus and interest.

my mom made me watch this the week before i went on my senior trip to rome. at dinner one night i asked the head chaperone to please take us to trevi fountain during the day and the very next day he did it. the whole time we were walking to it and while we were actually at the fountain i couldnt help but continually sing frank sinatra's song. "three coins in the fountain, each one seeking happiness, thrown by three hopeful lovers, which one will the fountain bless..."
