A rather dark second half betrays the film's light humour. However, it's an enjoyable buddy comedy with MacKenzie Crook proving he can take the lead.

Recommended to me by a trusted viewer nonetheless I was not too keen once I read the synopsis. But it's actually a damn good film with a damn good look at differing human characters. Meaney is the usual gruff hard old man seemingly down on his luck but in fact where he put himself when he buggered off and left his family, Crook gives his best performance since The Office and Arterton (as well as being beautiful) is actually very good

Typical Britcom: Starts funny, get to serious premise, funny interludes, serious bit, emotional bit, uplifting ending. Crook doesn't seem to have the depth to pull off this role. Meany and Arterton are competent, but Imelda Staunton steals the show here. Some laugh-out-loud moments, but ultimately film-by-numbers. See Forgetting Sarah Marshall instead. This'll be Â£2.99 in Woolies within the year.

Thought it would be a good one given it's imaginative story, but it ended up being a regular English comedy, with a typically unexpected ending for a English film.
