A really quirky and hilarious film with quite a poignant theme and message. Outstanding performance from Sean Penn who plays an ageing rock star who looks like the live child of Edward Scissorhands and Germaine Greer. Random scenes and quirky dialogue make this a highly recommended film with a touching ending.

I seriously loved this movie. Sean Penn is his usual genius at inhabiting a character and bringing them to life. The story is equal parts quirky and brilliant, contemplative and life-affirming, funny and serious. The photography is gorgeous. And it's a rare occasion that you can watch an Italian, French, Irish film made largely in the U.S. It's kind of miraculous how well it works. It could have been a disaster. But it's the opposite.

I completely understand where Joe Morgenstern is coming from in his pan of this film - and when I truly think about it, it's not a film of immense substance, and it doesn't make sense in many ways. But there's something about the way that Penn plays the role that connects with me. The portrayal reminds me of a friend, and perhaps that colored my judgement a bit, but I really feel like I need to see this film again. His ultimate treatment of the Nazi war criminal seemed a bit out of left field to me, and I'm sure it was meant as food for thought. It's the most disturbing movie in an otherwise genial, benign flick.

Quietly funny, rather enjoyable movie. Sean Penn was astounding as the aging goth ex-rock star who is cruising along with everyone indulging his idle idiosyncrasies until he gets a phone call out of the blue ...

I love this movie. Sean Penn is amazing...I love Cheyanne's sheepish laugh, his/her non-reactive reactions, and idiosynchrosies of the character. This movie is really about overcoming and I admire overcomers in life and the movies.
