marlon brando with bleached blond hair and a german accent surprisingly avoids being ridiculous, montgomery clift post-accident, visibly worn out from pills and alcohol... it was only five years ago that he was in 'from here to eternity' wearing he same uniform, looking fresh and ready for action. poor guy. he gets beat up in this too. i think he really does like to fight, like his character says. [marilyn later described him as 'the only person i know who is in worse shape than i am' as she was spiraling out herself during the filming of 'the misfits.'] dean martin is basically dean martin, a singer who does his best to avoid danger while his buddies are sent to the front lines... not a bad movie, but maybe too long

brando makes for a hot nazi, but that's about it for this film. dmytryk made several great film noirs but doesn't get to flex his creative talent because the film is too muzzled by the studio's prestige picture ambitions and claims of fidelity to the novel on which its based. 'the young lions' is stuck somewhere between the melodrama of earlier war pictures and the gritty, violent realism emerging at the time and it fails to deliver a cohesive and satisfying coalescence of elements. the acting is very strong, however, especially from the female actresses, playing variations of the noir femme fatale. monty clift gives a very strange performance but it's both distracting and disheartening to see his once-beautiful face so pale and worn after his motorcycle accident.

I will say upfront that I am probably not objective about this film. I love WWII films to start with, I am a fan of both Clift and Brando and I love the start-with-ten-separate-stories-and-let-them-come-together-at-the-end genre (is it a genre?). So I will say that if this is the kind of film you like, you will really like this film. And I really liked it. They don't really say who wrote the score, but it has its stirring moments.

It made me see Brando in a different light and I liked it. Clift's part should have benn bigger and the movie could have been shorter but it was still very good.

An interesting film for many reasons, the come back to the screen of montgomery clift after his accident,the controversial script (adaptated from the controversial novel of the same name, and one of Marlon brando's best performances in all his career. Critics and moviegoers alike were negative towards Brando's performance as German officer Christian diestl at that time, now that performance is considered a landmark in acting, mostly because of brando coloring his hair from its natural color to blond and the fatal end of his character in this movie. Montgomery clift was/is brilliant as always.
