In the rail yards of Queens, contractors repair and rebuild the city's subway cars. These contracts are lucrative, so graft and corruption are rife. Handily worth seeing for anyone who is thrilled by terrific acting.

I wasn't sure about giving it a six, but it did manage to convince me because I didn't find it disappointing. The Yards has an excellent main cast, but suffers greatly from a lack of transcendence due to its reluctance to focus on unnecessary characterizations that add nothing to what the film achieves in other sections, especially since here both the plot and its cast do get it right, and therefore manage to drive the story as best they can with what they are given. Although they don't get anything that becomes special or more attractive, and it's a shame because the film had elements with which it could have achieved it.

Outstanding film. This film had great drama and was a good thriller. The directing and screenplay by Gray was amazing. Wahlberg and Phoenix were great actors in this film.

James Gray's The Yards is a sweeping and assured sophomore effort, a Greek tragedy by way of Sidney Lumet's New York dramas. Gray directs with a seriousness and an appreciation for the slow build that stands at stark odds with the hipness and self-referentiality that plague most contemporary indie films. With an excellent ensemble cast, beautiful cinematography by Harris Savides, and a wonderfully elegiac score by Howard Shore.

Great film that was unfairly dumped by Miramax upon release. Excellent cast and a solid script make this worth rediscovering.
