An American falls in love with a Chinese woman who is also a prostitute. Nice scenery of Hong Kong.

This is a 1960 classic romantic movie, filmed in Hong Kong, where a mature American man (William Holden) seeks a second career as a painter. A beautiful and spunky Chinese bar girl (Nancy Kwan) captures his attention and becomes the focus of most of his paintings. Well shot; lots of great Hong Kong scenes.

It is sad to see Richard Quine, once a fair hope for 'mad' comedy, but growing progressively more sentimental and soft, slithering into a fifth-rate weepie like The World of Suzie Wang.

i enjoyed this for a few reasons and it bothered me for a few reasons(stereotypes, racism). i liked it as a sort of window of 1960 hong kong and seeing how much it's changed since then. i decided to watch it because it was mentioned in a film book i'm reading. it's a hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold story. not the best movie you'll ever see but i thought it was enjoyable.
