The Whole Wide World (1996)

In 1930s Texas, pulp fiction master Robert E. Howard is introduced to Novalyne Price, a teacher with aspirations of becoming an author herself, and they begin a unique relationship filled with conversation and imagination. Although the possibility exists for romance, Howard's obsession with his work and dedication to his sick mother leads Price to look elsewhere for love, leaving Howard feeling betrayed and alone.

Renee Zellweger stars as a Southern spinster who falls for an unstable writer named Robert B Howard (aka the creator of Conan the Barbarian). Howard (Vincent D'Onofrio) is unpredictable and never knows what he wants but he builds a friendship with Zellweger's character. By the time he hurts her the third time, I wanted to shut the movie off. What was the point? Why was she so obsessed with him? I could see her interest in his writing because to this day I still love all the Conan stories from Howard which was the reason I wanted to see this film. But everything about him made her hate him more. So why keep going even if he is a savant. The best I could compare it to was "Wuthering Heights" where Cathy falls for Heathcliff even though she despises him. The heroine does smarten up but by then we really don't care. (1 out of 5) So Says the Soothsayer.

This cast is amazingly beautiful. Vincent's best film. Very real, very romantic. The story will make you tear up.
