Frank Galvin is a down-on-his-luck lawyer and reduced to drinking and ambulance chasing, when a former associate reminds him of his obligations in a medical malpractice suit by serving it to Galvin on a silver platter—all parties are willing to settle out of court. Blundering his way through the preliminaries, Galvin suddenly realizes that the case should actually go to court—to punish the guilty, to get a decent settlement for his clients... and to restore his standing as a lawyer.

One of Newman's best. Also one of Lumet's best.

Mamet's best writing. He finally fades into the characters, and the structure is classical perfection.

My favorite Newman movie, this serves as a handbook for acting, direction & screenwriting. Newman as a lost soul redeemed, Warden his spirit guide, Rampling his betrayer; all played with deftness & believability. And the plot! The audience cheered aloud at the climactical scene, a 1st for me.

It's a court room movie, but mainly about what a big loser the main character is and his great comeback, sounds boring, but Newman (RIP) is the whole reason to watch this.
