Frank Galvin is a down-on-his-luck lawyer and reduced to drinking and ambulance chasing, when a former associate reminds him of his obligations in a medical malpractice suit by serving it to Galvin on a silver platter—all parties are willing to settle out of court. Blundering his way through the preliminaries, Galvin suddenly realizes that the case should actually go to court—to punish the guilty, to get a decent settlement for his clients... and to restore his standing as a lawyer.

Worth it just to see Newman and Mason on screen together. Luckily, the rest of the movie is fantastic, too.

Lumet's return to the courtroom drama is first-rate with Newman in tow

The Verdict is a thrilling courtroom drama. (After watching it again recently, I was struck by the desire to become a trial lawyer, which seems startling to me as a future music teacher!) I never grow tired of watching this film and rooting for Paul Newman. Charlotte Rampling is strikingly vivid and memorable in how she portrays her character's stoic, mysterious nature.
