Leon Bronstein is not your average Montreal West high school student. For one thing, none of his peers can claim to be the reincarnation of early 20th century Soviet iconoclast and Red Army hero, Leon Trotsky. When his father sends Leon to public school as punishment for starting a hunger strike at Papa's clothing factory, Leon quickly lends new meaning to the term 'student union', determined as he is to live out his pre-ordained destiny to the fullest and change the world.

The Trotsky goes down easily and, for what it’s worth, is better mannered than most contemporary youth comedies.

Definitely worth a watch. Conveniently I was well-versed enough in the Russian Revolution to already understand most of the movie's references, but for people who aren't, I think it gives them context pretty well. I love Jay Baruchel, especially in a role like this. Reminds me of a more political and serious version of Charlie Bartlett.

I was wondering how it came out through the Hollywood system and then realised that it's a Canadian film. A very smart and offbeat dramedy which requires some knowledge of Russian history, but pays off in abundance. This is about a teenager who believes he is the reincarnation of Leon Trotsky and attempts to follow his footsteps. Amusing, entertaining, insightful and at times inspiring.

Handful of gags fall flat and those who can only handle low doses of Barchuel may grow tired of his shtick, but it's a curiously enjoyable experience and educational, too.

Although I found this a bit slow at the beginning the wit and charm of Jay Baruchel completely makes up for it. As a young Canadian the boredom I have endured in the public school system wasn't just clever play on the oppressed proletarian but an ever increasing condition among the youth of Canada. I hope many young Canadians have a chance to see this movie and are able to take away a little bit of Leon.
