The Trials of Darryl Hunt (2007)

"The Trials of Darryl Hunt" is a feature documentary about a brutal rape/murder case and a wrongly convicted man, Darryl Hunt, who spent nearly twenty years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Both a social justice story and a personally driven narrative, the film chronicles this capital case from 1984 through 2004. With exclusive footage from two decades, the film frames the judicial and emotional response to a chilling crime - and the implications that reverberate from Hunt's conviction - against a backdrop of class and racial bias in the South and in the American criminal justice system.

It's really sad how much systems fail, and how much people trust systems with unquestioning faith, against all logic, against all reason. This is an incredibly frustrating tale, that sadly, truthfully shows that life is not interested in entertainment - and thus, what's right, what's "supposed to happen," all too rarely does.

Advocacy cinema at its most searingly direct, The Trials of Darryl Hunt is a powerful and unsettling chronicle of the 20-year struggle to free a man twice convicted of a crime he didn't commit.

A fascinating document of one of the darkest chapters in North Carolina's judicial system. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Hunt after the screening and he is a powerful presence. Hands down, the best documentary of 2006.

this movie and "The Thin Blue Line" are the definitive studies on the unthinkable atrocities of the american judicial system. The unholy combination of misrepresented evidence, sensationalist lawyers, and small town racism combine into one of the most abhorrent abuses of the judicial system in recent memory. While the "Thin Blue Line" is cool , distant and philosophical, the Trials of Darryl Flint packs more heart and manages to speak on a more universal level.

It was an interesting movie, and it seemed like an even more interesting case. It seems that emotive racism kept him from getting new trials, but it also seemed as if a different kind of emotion was ultimately responsible for his release. I two edged sword, I suppose.
