The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933)

After a detective is assaulted by thugs and placed in an asylum run by Professor Baum, he observes the professor's preoccupation with another patient, the criminal genius Dr. Mabuse the hypnotist. When Mabuse's notes are found to be connected with a rash of recent crimes, Commissioner Lohmann must determine how Mabuse is communicating with the criminals, despite conflicting reports on the doctor's whereabouts, and capture him for good.

Maybe the greatest political thriller ever made, more so because it doesn't SEEM like one. Lang's not-so-secret message to the German public went sadly but unsurprisingly unheeded. Shortly after the film was suppressed by scumbag Nazi authorities, Lang left his homeland and traveled to Hollywood, USA, where he became one of the greatest practitioners of the film noir, and offered a number of surprises before the end of his long career.

There are images in this movie that still terrify me & it's been months since I saw it. All the elements are there, building from the first Mabuse film & moving in fascinating new turns. This is a masterpiece, hands down.

another spectacular film from fritz lang. its not of the same artistic significance of the likes of M but still haunting and utterly arresting. it still amazes me that he made such a brilliant movie in such an early and formative time in film. it certainly could be categorized as german expressionistic film making. his techniques are so fun and almost playful at times even though its a very dark film. its very much like dr. caligari in many ways. we may never know what langs intent really was since he was notorious for making things up when talking about his films but i wonder if he didnt do that to confound the viewer even further and provoke multiple reactions. maybe its a stretch but its still interesting to think about. if you like old cultish films....this is awesome. even though its more than just that.

I'm usually disappointed and bored by "classic" films from this era (thanks MTV for decimating my attention span and lowering my standards!), but this one kept me hooked. The plot & storyline and the character of Dr. Mabuse are intricate and fascinating and make this film much more than just some pulp crime drama. The opening scene is an awesome piece of filmmaking. Some flaws (I'm looking at you, sappy romantic subplot), but a great film overall.
