Esta pelicula se adentra en el mundo de los timadores y en todos esos trucos de los que se valen para salirse con la suya. En general, los que siempre llevan las de perder son los pobres (una critica obvia a la ignorancia, al desempleo, a la avaricia y falta de educacion) y asi, este trio de 'ladri' se encargan de ir por la vida logrando quitarle el poco dinero a los que poco tienen. Quizas muy reflexiva y con alegorias hacia la falta de escrupulos dentro de una sociedad de crapulas, culmina desafortunadamente, tal y como empieza pero con menos suerte para Augusto (Broderick Crawford) quien termina 'ammazzato' de manos de sus nuevos secuaces. Algunos personajes quedan en vilo como Iris (Giulietta Masina) y Picasso (Richard Basehart), pero aun asi, la peli se salva por critica y fuerte en algunos momentos.

Fellini's film is a portrait of a group of swindlers who prey on the poor and ignorant people of the Italian countryside. The film can be comical a times, but it's really a dark and cold crime drama. However, it is the most straight forward and hence paradoxically one of the least interesting in Fellini's filmography, as well as one that possibly represents the filmmaker least.

An obvious cheap-crime picture, very much on the sentimental side, and therefore thematically inferior to the two films it fell between. But it contains some very strong Fellini phases and accumulations of moods that make it well worth seeing.

This forgotten Fellini classic - which was initially a flop in Italy and also in the USA - is a poignant and heartbreaking character study that manages to make us feel pity and sympathy towards the worst kind of swindler, the one who deceives and takes money from the poor.
