The progression from comedy to tragedy signals Fellini's most religious work

Martin T 26 Oct 2009

Fellini's film is a portrait of a group of swindlers who prey on the poor and ignorant people of the Italian countryside. The film can be comical a times, but it's really a dark and cold crime drama. However, it is the most straight forward and hence paradoxically one of the least interesting in Fellini's filmography, as well as one that possibly represents the filmmaker least.

Mediocre at best. Fellini had so many hits he had to have a few clunkers here and there. Worth seeing at least once.

strong film. the person i watched it with told me that fellini had to change some scenes to accomodate the lead man (Broderick Crawford) because he had such a severe drinking problem. it shows, especially in the last 5-10 minutes of the film. Crawford's mannerisms are eerily reminiscent of James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano. i enjoyed this film.
