Finds beauty, madness and outright bizarreness in the sight of a lost, slightly freakish man attempting to understand his altering reality.

Issei Ogata gives a pretty wonderful central performance. Most of the movie is very quiet and subdued; and more and more those kinds of movies only make me think: Where's the challenge in filming long sequences of silence? Worth a watch but only deranged critics who think loving all foreign movies will get them into critic Heaven should put this on their top-whatever lists.

A heavyweight masterpiece in a lightweight digital form.

The measured direction can feel sluggish as the camera refuses to cut away from lengthy scenes of people getting dressed or filing out of rooms, but Ogata's multi-layered performance more than compensates.

It's a baroque and intermittently brilliant brain twister so convoluted that it inevitably deposits the viewer in an alternate universe.
