Its stunningly composed images showing how Isaac is himself something of a ghost-given to staring off into the distance, being condescended to by those around him, a man perpetually outside the times. What he needs is to take that one extra step toward his spectral siren; the scene in which he does so might be one of the most exhilarating visions of death's sweet embrace ever filmed.

"Angélica" feels most like the film that argues Oliveira is this close to the beyond without ever bothering to knock first at death's door.

Prairie Miller 24 Dec 2010

The mystical when not earthy, Chaplinesque images are enchanting. In particular the artist's pursuit of his elusive muse, ecstatically locked in a wordless embrace with the beaming apparition as she takes him on a journey floating across the night sky.

It's quite a struggle to enjoy this film. In a bigger plot, it is nonsensical. But every tiny piece of it is somewhat intriguing. This is a festival-type of movie. Beware.

Stitched tightly together by a patient and loving director, The Strange Case of Angelica haunts its audience with a combination of old-fashioned ghost story and current political commentary. "Angelica!!!"
