Four Daughters (1938)

Musician Adam Lemp and his four equally musical daughters, Emma, Ann, Kay, and Thea, live happily together. Each daughter has an upstanding young man for whom she cares. A typical, sentimental small-town family melodrama of the 1930s, with one exception: John Garfield in a stunning screen debut as a brooding outsider.

If you can keep up the with the fast and tight 1930's style WB dialogue you'll this drama/comedy about 4 musical daughters who have Claude Rains as the conductor/composer Dad who lives in 30's ville and of course the abundant male suitors ringing the door bell. It's funny that in this era WB's big money makers were the Gangster films and for whatever reason te writers found a way to catch that vibe with one of the guys pre-James Dean: actor John Garfield a drifter piano player who elopes with the youngest daughter on her wedding day to his best friend. Of course she's still really in love with the other guys and since Garfield's the "villain" and a 1930's divorce is out of the question, Garfield plows his car into a tree and dies. A happy ending for everybody. Seriously, it ends with a happy ending soon after the accident.

John Garfield gets all of the acclaim for Four Daughters but Priscilla Lane is the real star of the show.

Tuesday, September 28, 2010 (1938) Four Daughters DRAMA Unusual drama vehilce for Michael Curtiz (Casablanca) who is known for directing adventure films. A better way to describe this film was a popular soap opera during that time about four musical daughters starring Priscilla Lane, spawning 2 more sequels- "Four Wives (1939)" and then "Four Mothers (1941)" and a retelling of Four Daughters called "Daughters Courageous"! This was also John Garfield's movie debut! 3 out of 4 stars

Quaint is as good a word as any to describe this film, that's not always a bad thing though especially with a cast as good as this. Claude Rains and May Robson keep the schmaltz to a minimum, Priscilla is very pretty and best of all is John Garfield, wonderfully contemporary even in this slice of Americana.
