perhaps greatest part for me was the quote from paul bowles himself, right at the very end - and pretty sure wasn't even in his own book ..?

Lust, loss and alienation in the desert. Bertolucci captured the haunting deserts and the 'exotic' North African culture brilliantly but has a tougher time fleshing out the internal lives of the protagonists.

Better than the English Patient which it preceded: similar cinematography, and based on the great novel by Bowles.

strange yet nicely done. i'd put this in the category (story wise) with english patient

At the core of this film there is a question about human's shelter. Where we can find our true refuge in this threatening world? The American couple flee from NY with this implicit idea that civilisation is a prision for their creativity, perception and sentiment. In the Africa, under the shelter of sky there seems to be a sort of security. However, it soon turnes out that there is no shelter from depression, disorientation and death. What I love about this film is that the characters don't go back to the starting point, to where they first escape from. Rather, they fuse with African life and keep their hearts open for new perceptions.
