A film that challenges you to figure things out rather than have them spoon-fed to you..[a]nd it gives Broadbent...the relatively rare opportunity to shine in a lead role worthy of his gifts.

Batra has assembled a strong cast, a thoughtful screenplay (by Nick Payne), a meticulous attention to detail — all of which make The Sense of an Ending a pleasure to watch. But the book ever-so-subtly slams you in the heart; the movie, just as subtly, only walks near it.

Strangely enough, an ending is precisely what this meandering, bloated, self-important melodrama needs, but its lack thereof, one might suppose, aptly enables the film to authentically live up to the essence of its title. It's truly unfortunate also that the picture features a bevy of excellent performances in search of a story in which to place them. Ultimately, however, fine acting and stylish production values aren't enough to save a film that fundamentally doesn't bring its narrative to satisfying or even ironically ambiguous closure.

It's a film filled with slow-burning intrigue, and offers a nice mystery plot to the usual 'slice of life' drama.
